If you were on Facebook yesterday,  you no doubt heard about the new rules regarding promotions using your Facebook Fanpage.  I heard from a couple of Mom Owned Businesses who had their pages shutdown for hosting giveaways on their pages. Its very scary for all of us Moms who use Facebook as a tool to grow our businesses.  We have all invested a lot of time and energy building our followings.  Its hard to believe that with the click of a button, Facebook can take down our pages without any warning.

I can't imagine that Facebook can track the millions of businesses who use its site to see what they are up to - but I'm sure you are with me in that you aren't willing to take a chance to find out if you are one of the unlucky ones that gets caught.

Here is the official info from Facebook:

Promotions Guidelines

Date of Last Revision: May 11, 2011

These Promotion Guidelines, along with the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, the Ad Guidelines, the Platform Policies and all other applicable Facebook policies, govern your communication about or administration of any contest, competition, sweepstakes or other similar offering (each, a "promotion") using Facebook.

If you use Facebook to communicate about or administer a promotion, you are responsible for the lawful operation of that promotion, including the official rules, offer terms and eligibility requirements (e.g., age and residency restrictions), and compliance with regulations governing the promotion and all prizes offered in connection with the promotion (e.g., registration and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals).  Please note that compliance with these Guidelines does not constitute the lawfulness of a promotion.  Promotions are subject to many regulations and if you are not certain that your promotion complies with applicable law, please consult with an expert.

1. Promotions on Facebook must be administered within Apps on Facebook.com, either on a Canvas Page or an app on a Page Tab.
    
2. Promotions on Facebook must include the following:
   a. A complete release of Facebook by each entrant or participant.
   b. Acknowledgment that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.
   c. Disclosure that the participant is providing information to [disclose recipient(s) of information] and not to Facebook.
    
3. You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism.  For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant. 
    
4. You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app.  For example, you must not condition registration or entry upon the user liking a Wall post, or commenting or uploading a photo on a Wall.
    
5. You must not use Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism for a promotion.
    
6. You must not notify winners through Facebook, such as through Facebook messages, chat, or posts on profiles or Pages.
    
7. You may not use Facebook’s name, trademarks, trade names, copyrights, or any other intellectual property in connection with a promotion or mention Facebook in the rules or materials relating to the promotion, except as needed to fulfill your obligations under Section 2.
    
8. Definitions:
   a. By “administration” we mean the operation of any element of the promotion, such as collecting entries, conducting a drawing, judging entries, or notifying winners.
   b. By “communication” we mean promoting, advertising or referencing a promotion in any way on Facebook, e.g., in ads, on a Page, or in a Wall post.
   c. By “contest” or “competition” we mean a promotion that includes a prize of monetary value and a winner determined on the basis of skill (i.e., through judging based on specific criteria).
   d. By “sweepstakes” we mean a promotion that includes a prize of monetary value and a winner selected on the basis of chance.

As I understand it - the giveaways I have done in the past are now illegal.  Point #3 in particular makes most of our contests illegal.

So what is a business to do?  Marketmommies has a giveaway scheduled to start on Sunday.  I'm moving it over to the website and encouraging fans to like the various sponsors Facebook Fanpages.  I also changed the name, to get rid of the Facebook name in the title (point #7 above).  My understanding is I can still promote the giveaway occurring on Marketmommies.com on Facebook - as long as I don't use Facebook's name, or use any function of Facebook as a way of winning the giveaway.  You also may not notify or list winners of your giveaways on Facebook.

I have investigated the 3rd party apps that you can use to host a giveaway.  However, I found them hard to navigate, a bit limited in their functions (didn't find one that would let me post 60 photos for each giveaway), and cost $$$, sometimes lots of money.  I do these giveaways for free as a helpful tool for Mom Owned Businesses to grow their followings - so I don't want to spend a ton of money on it.

My guess is Facebook is cracking down in an attempt to get businesses to spend their ad dollars on Facebook advertising rather than with the individual pages.  If that's the case, they need to look at their costs - because not many businesses can afford that.

Shoutouts -
I haven't seen anything official about stopping shout out programs.  If you aren't familiar with Shout Outs - its when a business pays the operator of a Facebook Fanpage to give them shout outs on their wall.  It could be to follow the business or promote a sale or giveaway.

I have seen some speculation that Shout Outs are covered by the new policy - but I don't see where shoutouts are illegal.  But again - am I willing to bet my page on it - probably not.

So Marketmommies Shout out program is changing a bit.  Our program will be based on Marketmommies.com - but will include shoutouts to promote a business' sales or promotions.  So, you will buy advertising on Marketmommies.com and one of the benefits will be daily shout outs on Facebook.

I hope this all makes sense (I'm trying to write this while peeling stickers out of my Dora Sticker book - multi-tasking at its finest :)

This isn't meant to be a comprehensive look at the policies - nor am I an expert - but thought sharing the info. I have learned would be useful to all of the Mom Owned Businesses in our Community.

Food allergies effect approximately12 million people in the United States, according to the Food Allergy Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN).  FAAN is a non -profit organization supporting food allergy research and education nationwide.   Our family has been living with food allergies for five years.  Although food allergies are a part of our lives, like brushing your teeth,  we do meet new challenges frequently.  How do food allergies effect our family?    We have become accustomed to reading all labels, talking to restaurant managers when we eat out, washing hands frequently, carrying an epipen, and have what we consider our nut radar on at all times.  We are accustomed to baking special treats for birthday parties, classroom celebrations, and holidays. It is not uncommon for us to be baking cupcakes or brownies late at night or early in the mornings.  We are forever grateful to the parents that provide safe cake for us and  to those that give us advance notice which gives us the opportunity to bake a safe treat.  I also chose to be room mom for my sons kindergarten class, which gives me the opportunity to plan and provide all the celebration treats.  Sounds easy, right?  Nuts are everywhere and we are reminded on a daily basis.  Just last week we sat next to a sweet five year old at a concert who was eating nuts.  Our red flag of concern and fear flew high, especially since our kids were playing with her.   We had just read an article on the way to the event about a girl that is in a coma after eating cereal that unknowingly had nuts in it. 

 Food allergies are real and they are on the rise.  

How can you help?  Put your foot in our shoes and teach your children to do the same.  Practice compassion and teach your children compassion.  When you are considering providing a treat in the classroom, ask yourself if you are okay with your child being left out.  Imagine your child sitting at a table with 20 friends and not being able to share in the same treat.   Although we try to teach our kids to love themselves,  that everyone is different and that is makes the world a better place, we also have to understand that they are KIDS!

Marketmommies is on its way to 6,000 Facebook Fans!  In honor of this feat, we are hosting another MM Facebook Giveaway! We are currently accepting vendors.  Its free to participate - but we do have a couple of guidelines for Mom Owned Businesses interested in participating:

* Value of your giveaway should be a minimum of $15.  This helps us help you get new followers.  The bigger your giveaway, the more Facebook Followers we will send your way!
* Shipping should be included in your giveaway.
* The giveaway will run for one week beginning, Sunday, May 15 and end Sunday, May 22nd.
* During the giveaway, please plan to give Marketmommies Giveaway at least 3 shout outs on your Facebook Fan page.  We will give your business shout outs in our giveaway as well.
* Marketmommies will draw the winners using Random.org and will post them on Monday, May 23rd on Marketmommies.com.

If your would like to participate in the 6,000 Fan giveaway - please email toni@marketmommies.com with the following info. Please keep it to one email with all of the details (helps us make sure we get all the info correct!)
* Name of your business
* Links to your shop and Facebook Fanpage

I vividly remember setting up Marketmommies Facebook Fanpage.  The number next to fans was 1... and that was me.  My mom and husband quickly added to the number - but 3 is still a lonely number on Facebook.

Here we are 5,000 Fans later!  We are planning a fabulous giveaway, including a $50 Paypal Gift Certificate from Marketmommies, and lots of other great prizes from Mom Owned Businesses!

Our Giveaway will start on Tuesday, April 26 and run through Monday, May 2nd.  

We are currently accepting vendors for our Huge 5,000 FB Fan Giveaway!  This is great exposure for Mom Owned Businesses as we will promote you on our FB Fanpage to our fans, and through our email blast and Marketmommies.com website.  In exchange for promoting your business in our giveaway, we ask that you share Marketmommies with your fans too with posts on your Facebook Fanpage.  Fans for Marketmommies means fans for all Mom Owned Businesses!

Marketmommies will post the giveaways from each of the vendors on Monday, April 25th.  Entrees can start entering to win on Tuesday, April 26th.  To enter, an entree will have to go to your business'  FB Fanpage, like your page and come back to the contest and leave a comment that they are a fan of yours.  

On Tuesday, May 3rd, Marketmommies will select a winner from each vendor's giveaway using random.org.  We will notify you who won your  giveaway. We will need each business to confirm that the winner is indeed a fan. If that person is not a fan of your business at that time, they will be disqualified and we will select another winner.

Businesses will be responsible for shipping the product to the winner.

I love scrapbooking!  I so wish I had more time for it.  I could probably lock myself in my basement for days and all I do it scrapbook and make cards.  Somehow it just gives me peace and clears my minds.  My son was born 3 ½ years ago and I am still working on his fist year scrapbook.  I think I have scraped up to the baby show but that is about it.  One thing I have not gotten into fully yet is digital scrapbooking.  I always thought it would be hard to do, but after looking at ScrapEdub’s website I am so ready to jump in.  These Digital Scrapbook Kits include everything you need to make a stunning scrapbook: embellishments, papers, alphabets, word art and more.   I love that I am able to purchase everything right away and start making my pages.  So much easier and less brain damage then the way I have been doing it.  Some of my pages have taken me hours upon hours to make, because I am searching from the right paper and embellishments to go with everything.  When you purchase a Digital Scrapbooking Kit from ScrapEdub you are set and ready to go.  Not only does everything coordinate, but you are saving time.  Win…Win situation, if you ask me!

Erin, the owner of ScrapEdub, sent me a digital download, so I could try out the product and see how I liked it.  I have to say I loved it!  I received it right away, because it was e-mailed to me. I loved that I didn’t have to wait several days for it. It was easy to download and use. I made a number of scrapbook pages without all the time is takes to coordinator and think about what type of page I want to make.  Everything you need is right there for you.  One of my favorite parts of scrapbooking is the creativeness of it all and I was still able to do that. I used publisher to create my pages, but you do not have to use that software. There are a number of other types of software out there to help you create your pages.  You will need some type of design software to be able to use ScrapEdub digital designs.   After using ScrapEdub digital scrapbooking designs, I am SOLD on this type of scrapbooking.   It ROCKS!!!

I own an online children’s clothing store, so I have seen my fare share of infant and toddler clothing, but I have to say this is one of the cutest dresses I have seen.  Best part… they are custom made to fit you Rugrat.  RuGRAT DeSIGN was started in the spring of 2010 to provide designs and styles that are practical, unique, stylish and cost effective.  All items are hand made by Lesley (Owner of RuGRAT DeSIGN) are for real life use- for kids to play, for items to be used, for life as we know it to take place- just with a little added style!!   Not only does she make dress, but Lesley makes infant shoes, nursing covers, bag, car seat covers and so much more.  I know my son would just love the super hero cape she makes.  All of her items are super cute and very trendy.  Right now she features mostly children’s clothing, but keep your eyes opened, because Lesley is expanding her product line, which will include items for adults and the home.
